WooCommerce Core Web Vitals Overhaul: Passing LCP & INP
A battle-tested engineering roadmap for eliminating cart fragment bloat, optimizing database indexes, and passing Google Core Web Vitals on high-SKU stores.

Passing Google’s Core Web Vitals assessment on WooCommerce stores is notoriously difficult. Heavy themes, unoptimized database queries, dynamic cart fragments, and cluttered tag managers routinely push Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) past 4 seconds and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) beyond acceptable thresholds.
Here is the systematic methodology we use to achieve sub-second LCP and green INP scores without breaking checkout functionality.
1. Disabling AJAX Cart Fragments on Non-Cart Pages
By default, WooCommerce triggers an uncacheable wc-ajax=get_refreshed_fragments request on every page load to sync header mini-carts. On stores with hundreds of daily visitors, this saturates server worker threads and blocks main-thread rendering.
We replace client polling with localized session storage updates, restricting AJAX cart verification solely to actual shopping cart and checkout interactions.
2. Server-Side Object Caching with Redis
Database queries for product variations, tax tables, and customer transients quickly exhaust MySQL thread pools. Implementing persistent Redis object caching ensures that 95%+ of repeated database calls resolve directly from RAM in microseconds:
- Persistent transients cached in memory
- Query result caches warmed during catalog updates
- High-concurrency cart sessions decoupled from disk I/O
3. Critical CSS & Modern Image Formats
Above-the-fold hero banners and featured product grids are the main determinants of LCP. We inline critical CSS for above-the-fold layout primitives and serve modern AVIF and WebP image formats with explicit dimension attributes to eliminate Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).
Passing Core Web Vitals is not accomplished by installing another all-in-one optimization plugin. It requires disciplined server architecture, query hygiene, and strict asset budgeting.
